Google is an American company founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin (at the time, Ph.D students in Computer Science from Stanford University) on 27 September, 1998 with the objective of organizing all the world’s information and making it universally accessible to everyone across the globe. Google Inc. is the company that owns the brand Google, whose main product is the search engine of the same name.

The name of the company was derived from mathematics term known as googol. Googol refers to the number 10 raised to the power of 100. In other words, it is the digit 1 followed by one hundred zeros.

The early years

About six years after it was founded, the company moved to its current headquarters known as the Googleplex located precisely at 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, California in the year 2004.

Currently, Google Inc. is run by Indian-born Sundar Pichai, who previously served as Product Chief at Google. He was appointed as the Chief  Sundar PichaiExecutive Officer of Google on the 10th of August, 2015; a role he would fully resume on the 2nd of October, 2015 after a restructuring in the organisational structure within the company.

The company was earlier managed by Eric Schmidt who served as CEO from August 2001 until the 4th of April 2011 when he handed over the reins of the company back to Larry page from whom he had taken the position.

Services they offer

Although its foremost product is the search engine Google, the company also offers other services. Google specializes in the provision of online services, allied software, Internet, electronic devices and other technology products. Over the years, Google has developed several Internet-based products and the lion share of its revenue is generated through their Google AdWords advertising program.

The company’s financial strength is not in doubt considering its impressive sales revenue figures. For instance, in the first quarter of 2105, they reported a revenue of $17.3 which was a 12% revenue compared to the same time period from the previous year. Their three other quarters saw an increase in revenues as well with reported earnings of $17.8 billion (11% growth), $18.7 billion (13% growth) and $21.3 billion (18% growth) respectively.

Google’s most popular product is the internet search engine content that bears the name Google. No fact underscores the popularity of Google’s search engine more than the fact that it has found its way into the English vocabulary as well as both the Cambridge and Oxford dictionaries.

They also offer many software productivity solutions, such as the Gmail e-mail, Google Calendar and social networks like Google+. Google also has products like the Google Chrome browser, the Picasa photo-editing program, Google Translate and Google Talk instant messaging application, among many others. They equally have provide online 3D world maps with high-resolution imagery as a service through their Google Maps and Google Earth portals.

How they work

The company operates from more than a million servers in data centers scattered across the world which process over one billion search engine google datat centerrequests from users on a daily basis. They have offices located worldwide in more than 40 countries.

Google very actively acquires many smaller, emerging companies through which they offer some of their services. They have acquired more than 170 companies till date, with the $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola Mobility in August 2011 being their biggest investment. They also acquired the world’s largest video site, YouTube, for $1.65 billion on October 9th, 2006.

According to Alexa ranking statistics, Google is the most visited website on the planet with an Alexa ranking of 1.

In a major re-organisation, Google transformed into Alphabet Inc. on August 10, 2015, thus making Google a subsidiary of this new parent company.
